Protection against electrostatic discharge

fetra offers transport equipment in ESD design

In the course of digitalisation, there is an increasing number of products with electronic components. Robot vacuum cleaners, on-board computers in vehicles or App-controlled lighting systems are equipped with technologies including sensitive components for which manufacturers must exercise special care, because any occurring electrostatic discharge (ESD) can lead to serious damage. However, this is often only noticed when the components are installed in an electronic device which then fails to work. In addition to the financial losses that the producing company suffers as a result, this can lead to a strain on the customer relationship. fetra’s ESD transport equipment can provide a remedy: They are a safe solution for transporting and storing highly sensitive parts such as electronic assemblies.

Semiconductors, circuit boards and the like must be protected from electrostatic discharge during internal transport in order to maintain their functionality. To meet this challenge, fetra offers a wide range of ESD transport equipment in several sizes and for different loads. “In principle we can actually supply every product in our standard stock in ESD design upon request,” says Markus Rehm, Sales Manager DACH at fetra. He adds that apart from shelved trolleys, table top carts and steel tube trolleys, there is a growing demand for ESD mobile tilting stands in particular, which can be ergonomically adjusted by means of a spring lock and are therefore ideal for seated assembly activities.

ESD from the ground to the castor

The powder-coated steel tubing design of all fetra ESD units has a graphite component which ensures that any potential electrostatic discharge is dissipated. If the transport solution is equipped with wooden shelves, these comply with the specifications of DIN 68765 regarding their electrical conductivity. And finally, the wheels are also designed to prevent charging: Finest stainless steel fibres in the fetra TPE ESD castor guarantee absolute conductivity, something the user can recognise by a yellow dot on the tyre.

Greatest possible safety

For equipment sealing, which is produced in an in-house manufacturing process, the steel is first cleaned and roughened by shot blasting before the powder coating is applied. This makes the surface extremely resistant, robust and durable. The shelves of the fetra ESD trolleys are made of electrically conductive wood-based panels in light grey. They can be used for various purposes in a 100 mm grid, can be individually extended and the trolleys can carry loads of up to 750 kg. This means that even heavy electronic parts such as PC monitors and switchgear can be moved and stored safely. “Before dispatch, we check all ESD equipment for its electrical conductivity, document the results in a test chart and enclose it with the product,” Markus Rehm explains. The user therefore benefits from the greatest possible safety.

The Borgholzhausen-based German manufacturer presents the entire fetra ESD product range on the fetra website at www.fetra.de/en/esd. There is also an ESD brochure available for download at www.fetra.de/en/catalogue.
